That is a serious chunk of change.
And there will be a huge demand for online English teachers in the next two years. The entire industry is going to skyrocket.
Becoming an online English teacher could be your ticket to a flexible and rewarding career.
This is Part One of an eight-part series I have written called The Ultimate Guide To Being An Online English Teacher.
Throughout this series, I will walk you through everything you need to know, from the qualifications and skills required to finding students and growing your teaching business.
In this part, I want to just go over the basics of Online English Teaching – what it is, who the students are and what they want to learn, the platforms that offer work to you and the possibilities of life beyond the platforms.
Let’s dive into the basics of Online English Teaching.

Why This Matters to You
As the world develops, it becomes more interconnected than ever before.
English is the common thread that binds people in business, travel, education, and life itself.
For millions of English learners worldwide, access to high-quality English instruction is now just a click away. This has created endless opportunities for Online English Teachers like you.
Teaching English online is not just about helping others develop their English skills. It is also about creating a lifestyle that works for you.
Whether you are looking to supplement your income, escape the 9-to-5 grind, or embrace the digital nomad lifestyle, online English teaching offers unmatched flexibility.
You can choose when and where you work.
You can set your own rates if you are independent.
You can design your English lessons based on your strengths and passions.
Plus, there is a unique sense of fulfilment in watching your students grow in confidence and ability as their English skills improve, knowing that you played a key role in their success.

What Is Online English Teaching?
Online English teaching involves instructing students who wish to learn or improve their English skills using digital tools such as video conferencing platforms, computers, and other technical equipment like microphones and headphones.
The field has grown massively due to its convenience and accessibility. Students no longer need to attend traditional language schools in big cities—they can now connect with teachers from anywhere in the world.
What Are the Teaching Formats?
Online English teaching encompasses a range of different formats. Below are the most common ones:
One-on-One Classes
A teacher works with a single student.
Highly personalized lessons tailored to the student’s goals.
Common focuses: conversation practice, IELTS preparation, Business English.
Group Classes
Multiple students learning together.
Encourages discussions and interaction.
More affordable for students, but harder to manage online for the teacher.
Some teachers prefer in-person group classes over online ones.
In my personal opinion, I think group classes should be avoided online. The dynamic is not the same as in in a real live classroom setting.
I think for Online English Teaching, it is best to focus on One-on-One classes. These work best.

How You Can Work As An Online English Teacher
There are two primary ways to work as an online English teacher:
1. Online English Learning Platforms
These are companies that hire teachers and connect them with students. Examples include VIPKid, Cambly, and Preply.
Some of the online platforms provide a structured learning system and materials. But often they don’t.
Offer a large pool of students. This is their main strength!
Good for beginners to gain experience.
Lower pay and less control over teaching style.
Recommendation: Work here initially to learn the ropes, but consider moving on to independent teaching for more freedom and better pay.
There are many criticisms of the Online Platforms. Mainly because of the pay and the total lack of control of which students you can receive.
But good for gaining some quick experience!
2. Independent Online English Teacher
You find your own students. Yes, this is hard work!
You create or source your own materials.
You set your own rates.
More work, but greater earning potential and independence.
This path is like running your own business. It requires marketing, organization, and self-discipline, but the rewards can be significant.
Not everyone wishes to do this or to take on all the work required to do it.
But if you choose to do this, you will have total control over what you charge and which students you teach.

What Kind Of Classes You Can Teach
Online English teaching is highly versatile. You can specialize in areas such as:
English for Specific Purposes (medical, business, sales, aviation, etc.)
Teenagers and Young Kids
General English
If you go independent, choosing a niche can help you stand out and attract students.
Think about it, this is what all companies do. They specialise in one target demographic.
If you are thinking of going independent, you should do the same.

Who Are The Students?
Online English students come from diverse backgrounds and age groups.
Understanding your audience helps you tailor your teaching approach effectively.
Age Groups
Children (5-12 years old)
Learn basic vocabulary and phonics.
Require interactive lessons with games, songs, and visuals.
A large and growing market.
Teenagers (13-19 years old)
Need more advanced English skills.
Often take online lessons as an extension of school.
Require engaging and age-appropriate content.
College Students
Often prepare for studying abroad or English proficiency exams.
Require a balance of speaking, reading, listening, and writing practice.
Adults
Learn English for career advancement, travel, or personal reasons.
Have clear goals and expect structured lessons.
Professionals
Work in industries like tech, healthcare, or finance.
Need business communication, presentation, or interview training.
Often require soft skills coaching in addition to language training.

Where Do The Students Come From?
Online English learners come from all over the world.
Asia: The biggest market, especially in China, South Korea, and Japan.
Latin America: Growing demand in Brazil and Mexico due to globalization and tourism.
Europe and the Middle East: A steady demand for business and professional English training.
Wherever you decide to focus, there will always be students looking to improve their English skills.
Conclusion
I think it is fair to say that Online English Teaching is a thriving industry.
It offers flexibility and a certain degree of independence if you are even just working for one of the English Teaching platforms.
If you are prepared to do the work, then there could be more financial opportunities.
